Fifteen months after Mondelez unleashed Philadelphia with Cadbury on to unsuspecting shoppers, Tesco has waded into the market with its own chilled chocolate cheese spread.
Sold under its standard own-label range, its introduction forms part of a recent range review (see above).
The spread (rsp: £1.30 for a 200g tub), rolling into stores now, will go head to head with the three-strong Philadelphia with Cadbury range of 160g tub (rsp: £1.75), mini tub four-pack and snack pack with biscuits.
Mondelez launched Philadelphia with Cadbury in January 2012. It has racked up £10.6m in sales since launch [Nielsen mid-February 2012 to 20 April 2013].
The Tesco spread is made by Arla Foods, which also supplies soft cheese into the exclusive-to-Tesco Yum range.
As part of its range review, Tesco has listed Mondelez’s two new Philadelphia Simply Stir cooking sauces - in mushroom and garlic & herbs - which launched at the end of April. In addition, it has decided to move the standard Philadelphia lines next to grated cheese in its cheese fixture, to reflect their growing use in cooking.
