Aldi has notched up record growth as the big four supermarkets fight over a shrinking middle ground, latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel show

Aldi has notched up record sales growth in the latest grocery market share data from Kantar Worldpanel.

The discounter grew its sales by 32.7% year-on-year in the 12 weeks to 15 September. It also increased its market share to 3.7% from 2.9% a year ago.

Fellow discounters Lidl and Farmfoods also clocked up strong sales growth – of 14.3% and 25.8% respectively.

Among the big five, Sainsbury’s increased its market share from 16.4% a year ago to 16.6%, and grew sales by a market-beating 5.1%.

Waitrose, meanwhile, grew sales by 9.7% and increased its market share from 4.6% to 4.9%.

“Strong performances by retailers at both ends of the market pose a significant challenge for the big four supermarkets,” said Kantar Worldpanel director Edward Garner.

“The combined growth of Lidl, Aldi and Waitrose has taken three market share points out of the grocery market over the past three years and is forcing the major supermarkets to compete for an ever-smaller middle ground,” he added.

Morrisons and The Co-operative Group also reported positive sales growth of 1.6% and 0.3% respectively. However, both retailers saw their market share fall.

Meanwhile, Tesco’s market share slipped from 30.9% a year ago to 30.2%, while its sales grew by 1.9% during the period. Asda saw its share squeezed from 17.6% to 17.3%, while its sales grew 2.4%.
