The Co-operative Group is to sell Carers Trust wristbands across its estate following success in 12 shops in South Wales.
Garry Thompson, operations manager for Wales and Borders at The Co-operative Group, arranged for 3,000 wristbands printed with the Carers Trust logo – the society’s charity of the year - to be sold in 12 stores in the Rhondda area.
But the society was so impressed with the idea the £1 white wristbands will now be sold in all stores, as well as in its pharmacies.
“I can’t quite believe how quickly things have progressed with what initially started out as a small idea,” Thompson said.
“It is fantastic news that they will be rolled out nationally, both in food and pharmacy. I have had the full support of the team at head office in order to bring the project to life and I am sure it will generate much-needed funds for Carers Trust.”
CEO for retail Steve Murrells added: “One of the things I love about our charity of the year is the way that it gives colleagues a chance to work together on a project that benefits the communities in which we trade. I am delighted to see how this idea has grown from one area to cover the whole country.”
The Co-op Group is aiming to raise £5m for the Carers Trust this year and has so far raised half the amount.
