In one of the most remarkable performances in this year’s Gold Awards, Trewithen Dairy’s ongoing rebrand, and its completion of an £11.4m investment in a new processing site, saw this family-run business grow retail value sales by almost a third.
The rebranding, consolidated its milk, butter, cream and yoghurt products, was accompanied by NPD including flavoured yoghurts and a spreadable butter that took gold in The Grocer’s 2014 New Product Awards.
Such growth and innovation - taking place against a backdrop of plunging dairy prices and industry turmoil - made Trewithen the most inspiring entry in a category full of inspirational stories, said judges. Trewithen also took on 30 new staff and began sourcing milk from two further Cornish farms, taking its pool to 27 farms, all within 25 miles of the dairy, reinforcing its position as Cornwal’s largest bottler of milk.
