While peers relaxed into a well-earned retirement, Mary Berry was just getting started.
At 75 the baking aficionado dusted off her apron to join Paul Hollywood as judge on the Great British Bake Off, gently chiding contestants over tea and cake and becoming one of Britain’s national treasures.
Along with Hollywood, Berry has inspired a brand new appetite for home baking, which is now worth £480m in the UK, with many turning to Mary Berry’s Baking Bible manual for help. And far from putting her feet up at end of each season, Berry has brought her total cookbooks up to 75, starred in her own television series and produced a range of branded products.
“Why should I retire when I love every moment?” she asks. Fair point.
