Congratulations on winning the Grocer 33 for a second time! You’ve increased your market share from 9.3% back in 2015 - what has changed since then? The big new thing for us is we started offering same-day delivery and click & collect about 12 weeks ago. It’s a service we offer from Monday to Friday so for home delivery effectively if you place an order before midday, we will deliver it to you that evening from 6pm. That’s going brilliantly and really growing in demand. I think customers are using it as an opportunity to top up their existing online shops - it’s an easy top-up service - and there are a lot of new customers who in the morning are thinking ‘what am I going to have for tea?’ and we’re delivering it that evening. We are the only ones in Wales offering that service.
And you have just started stocking fresh gluten-free bread in Sainsbury’s stores. Yes we just launched gluten free bread baked in the in-store bakery this week. We did tastings in store and we’ve had really positive customer feedback. It doesn’t taste gluten-free - it tastes like normal bread.
How has the ‘food dancing’ ad gone down with customers? Customers seem to really like it. The ad is really uplifting - who doesn’t stand in the kitchen preparing food they really like and feel good about that? It seems that’s hit a bit of a positive nerve and I’ve had quite a lot of customers talking to me about how great it is.
How have you been affected by the fresh produce shortages? It has had a bit of a knock-on effect on iceberg lettuce and limes, but we always try to offer an alternative if someone asks.
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Are you expecting much in the way of trade? Yes, we have Valentine’s merchandise on display and we’ve got a great range of gifts and flowers. No doubt we’ll have the obligatory last-minute dash about 5pm on the 14 February of men running in buying roses! And then we start into Easter…
