Tesco has apologised after a mother complained that a Christmas card on sale at the supermarket was discriminatory to ginger-haired children.
The controversial card featured a message saying: “Santa loves all kinds. Even ginger ones.” That prompted a complaint from mother of three Davinia Phillips – whose daughters all have red hair.
“I have shown [the card] to a lot of friends and they are all disgusted,” Phillips told the Daily Mail. “Maybe I am just being naive but they shouldn't be able to make fun of ginger children like that.”
She added: “'I don't want people to think I'm a full-time mum with nothing better to do than find something to complain about.”
A spokesman for Tesco said: “We sell a large range of Christmas cards, including some which are intended to be humorous. It is never our intention to offend any customer and we are sorry if this card caused any upset.”
