The Nectar card is now the UK’s most popular loyalty card, according to Sainsbury’s, with almost 17 million card-holders in the UK.
The supermarket said the 16.8 million members of its loyalty scheme meant Nectar had overtaken Tesco’s Clubcard – which last year received a multimillion-pound relaunch – and the Boots Advantage card as the most widely-held card in UK retail.
“Customers are increasingly savvy and they shop around for the best value for money they can find,” said Sainsbury's customer director Gwyn Burr.
“Over one million new Nectar card holders have signed up in the past 12 months alone to take advantage of the benefits.”
