Tesco has promoted the head of its Japanese business, Michael Fleming, to a new global strategy role.
Fleming is handed the title of group strategy director and has returned to the UK after three years in Japan.
He will be replaced at the helm of the Japanese arm in due course – although questions have been raised over the company’s future in the market.
News of the appointment comes after Sir Richard Broadbent was last week confirmed as the company’s next chairman. He will succeed David Reid in November.
