Getting a nod from Cadbury in its advertising could be considered a bit of a coup, especially for a fading icon whose career might be in need of a pick-me-up. For instance, that legendary gorilla advert marked the first time in at least 15 years that anyone had looked forward to hearing a Phil Collins tune.
But a heated row has broken out between Cadbury and ageing supermodel turned author Naomi Campbell, who has accused the company of racism in a poster for its new Dairy Milk Bliss bar. 'Move over Naomi,' the ad advises. 'There's a new diva in town.' Ouch!
The "shocked" icon has interpreted the ad as a racial slur and is calling for an international boycott of products made by little-loved parent Kraft Foods.
"It's upsetting to be described as chocolate, not just for me but for all black people," she said.
Whether you feel the ad was insensitive, downright racist or just not very funny, it's easy to imagine the creatives behind it rolling their eyes wearily and cursing themselves for ever invoking the name of the famously litigious clotheshorse. As for whether there's really a new diva in town... as the saying goes, if you come at the king, you best not miss.
