Shetland Catch, the largest primary pelagic processor in Europe, is in the advanced stage of discussions with secondary fish processor Shetland Smokehouse over the acquisition of the company.
Shetland Catch MD Derek Leask said: "The natural evolution of the company is to move into secondary processing. Our interest in acquiring Shetland Smokehouse is twofold. Firstly, we can invest in the company, support it, expand it and allow it to flourish. Secondly, we can gain a vast knowledge about secondary processing."
Leask added: "A key factor in our success is our geographical position. The main problem facing today's seafood industry, as a whole, is sourcing a sufficient supply of quality raw materials. But because Shetland Catch is so close to the fishing grounds, this gives us guaranteed supplies of the freshest of fish.
Shetland Smokehouse MD Dave Hammond said: "This is a tremendous opportunity to develop our export business and piggyback on the competitive transport arrangements that Shetland Catch already has in place for its primary product."
