Expert's verdict: 7/10

?Full marks to the Real Vodka Company for sourcing a product that will provide retailers with a real point of difference. This premium vodka is filtered using a unique process that uses flint as opposed to the traditional flavour-sapping charcoal. The Minsk Krystal Distillery in Belarus provides the provenance and heritage through more than 100 years of production. The product is distinctive, full-bodied and has an extremely smooth, warming after-taste. The packaging is original and combines the traditional brand values of the producer with a modern day look and feel.

?I liked the frosted glass of the bottle, which looked even better after it had been in the freezer for a couple of hours. But I thought the design was a little cluttered and the actual name of the vodka didn't jump out at me. To sip, it was smoother than almost any other vodka I've had, with no burn and a slightly sweet taste. I rarely buy premium vodkas, but given it's a smaller bottle I'd consider this one. I wouldn't pay more than £15 for it though as I hardly ever sip vodka. After you've dumped it in a tonic, who can tell?

A year down the line... Carib Beer Company: Global Brands Launch price: 99p Today's price: 99p Acid test verdict: 4/5

Carib was launched to bring a little bit of the Caribbean to the UK. It is stocked in corner shops right through to wholesalers and clubs. Carib was also the official beer at the Notting Hill Carnival this year. In 2008 a two-pronged approach to the development of Carib will be taken. The first is to ensure loyal ex-pat communities are aware Carib is widely available. And the second is to continue to develop Carib's personality within retail.
