Aldi has rolled out compostable carrier bags in all UK stores after trialling them along with paper ones to see which customers preferred.
The discounter launched the trial last June last year, with half of UK stores offering the paper bags and the other half the compostable ones.
Aldi said today the compostable bag had proved most popular with customers.
It costs 6p and is made from biodegradable materials designed to be domestically compostable within 12 months.
It’s now offered in all 847 UK stores alongside Aldi’s 9p ‘flexi-loop’ bags for life, which are made from 100% recycled plastic.
“Reducing the amount of plastic we use is of huge importance to Aldi and we are continuously exploring and testing alternatives,” said Fritz Walleczek, Aldi UK & Ireland MD of corporate responsibility.
“The response from customers to our recent trial of compostable bags has been overwhelmingly positive and the decision to roll out nationwide was based on this valuable feedback.”
