Aldi is introducing cardboard porridge pots in a move it says will eliminate about 175 tonnes of plastic a year.
The discounter’s own brand plastic porridge pots are to be swapped for fully recyclable, card-based ones in all stores by early 2023.
Aldi said it was its latest move to cut out unnecessary plastic, with other steps this year including the removal of plastic shrink wrap from beans multipacks and the ditching of single-use plastic from own brand wipes.
“Moving to card for our porridge pots is yet another step forward in our commitment to reducing the use of plastic across our products,” said Aldi plastics and packaging director Richard Gorman.
“We know how important protecting the environment is to our customers, which is why we are committed to making changes like this that help make a difference.”
