With restaurants out of bounds this Valentine’s Day, couples will be looking to recreate a romantic dining experience at home – whether it be breakfast in bed, Sunday lunch, afternoon tea or a decadent dinner. Here are the restaurants and retailers offering dine-in kits for all meal occasions
Farmison & Co
Online butcher Farmison & Co, which specialises in British heritage breed meat, is offering a range of dine-in dinner boxes for Valentine’s Day this year. Each showcasing a different type of meat or poultry, the boxes are designed to bring flavours from around the world to consumers’ own tables. For example, couples can tuck in to a Cote de Boeuf with bernaise butter with The Frenchie Box (rsp: £49.95), or transport themselves to a Tuscan taverna with The Italian Box (rsp: £34.95). This features dry-aged osso bucco, pappardelle pasta and a bottle of Berry Bros & Rudd Chianti Classico (pictured). Those looking to spice up their evening with a chicken curry can opt for The Indian Box (rsp: £38) while half a Peking-style duck with pancakes and hoisin sauce should satisfy lovers of Chinese food (rsp: £25).
Gail’s
For those who believe breakfast is the most important – or romantic – meal of the day, bakery chain Gail’s has the solution. Its Chocolate Breakfast in Bed Hamper (rsp: £30) features two pain au chocolat, a loaf of chocolate sourdough, organic orange marmalade, Quicke’s butter, a litre of Daily Dose freshly squeezed orange juice and its own House Blend Coffee. Another option for sweet-toothed lovebirds is Gail’s Hot Chocolate Afternoon Tea Hamper (rsp: £25). This features all the elements to create a chocolatey tea for two, including Islands 75% dark chocolate buttons for making hot chocolate, vanilla shortbread, chocolate and cherry scones with Rodda’s clotted cream and two flourless chocolate cakes.
James Alexander Fine Foods
With 14 February falling on a Sunday this year, a roast dinner may be on the menu for some couples. To make the classic meal extra special, James Alexander Fine Foods is offering a luxury three-bird roast, featuring boneless chicken, duck and pheasant (rsp: £35/700g). For added decadence, the centrepiece comes with a jar of white truffle honey for drizzling on top. Customers can also order The Full Package box, which provides them with a drink, seafood starter and breakfast items in addition to the three-bird roast. It contains a bottle of Hawkins Bros Rose Reserve NV, smoked salmon, potted shrimps, caviar, sausages and smoked streaky bacon (rsp: £90).
The Angel at Hetton
Couples with a taste for fine dining can try their hand at recreating a Michelin star tasting menu this February, courtesy of The Angel at Hetton. The Yorkshire restaurant is offering a luxurious, seven-course menu for delivery nationwide (rsp: £140 or £110 vegetarian), featuring dishes such as baked scallop with crème fraiche dashi, celeriac & brown butter and beef wellington with bone marrow carrot, caramelised onion puree & truffle sauce. The menu also includes a cheese course, dessert and truffles, with a tea infusion to finish. All dishes will arrive fully prepared and ready for heating and come with plating instructions, so even your presentation can be worthy of a Michelin star. What’s more, The Angel has teamed up with fellow Yorkshire producer Otterbeck Distillery, which provides an aperetif in the form of a 20cl bottle of its Cotton Gin.
Pizza Pilgrims
Available via City Pantry, Pizza Pilgims’ Valentine’s Day Spritz Kit provides everything lovers need to create a pizzeria experience at home. The kit contains enough ingredients to make two margherita pizzas, as well as a ready-to-bake Nutella ring dessert and an Aperol Spritz cocktail kit (rsp: £35).
Drake & Morgan
Bar and restaurant chain Drake & Morgan is offering a Valentine’s Day dinner through its D&M At Home service, which has been providing brunch, cocktail and Sunday roast boxes while its venues are closed. The romantic package contains a bottle of Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé and all the ingredients and recipe cards to create a restaurant-quality meal at home. On the menu is whipped duck liver parfait with sourdough bread and pickles, followed by a 32-day aged Chateaubriand with confit potatoes, béarnaise sauce, salt baked beetroot, thyme roasted carrots and buttered cabbage. To end the meal is a heart shaped chocolate ganache with strawberry coulis, fresh strawberries, Chantilly cream and edible flowers. The boxes are available for delivery within the M25 and the Home Counties (rsp: £125).
London Pancake House
Fancy wooing your loved one with poetry and pancakes on Valentine’s morning? London Pancake House is providing all you need to do just that in its Valentine’s Breakfast Kit. The parcel contains an organic buttermilk pancake flour mix (or vegan and gluten-free alternative), bottles of Canadian maple syrup and Prosecco Rosé DOC and a book of Love Poems from Everyman’s Library Pocket Poets (rsp: £37.50).
Kolamba
Sri Lankan restaurant Kolamba, based in London’s Soho, has been offering finish-at-home Feasting Boxes while closed during the pandemic. Its Valentine’s Day edition is the Love One Another box (rsp: £80), which contains Banana Blossom Pattis, Chicken String Hopper Biriyani (pictured) and two vegan curries, along with pickle and raita. The box also features a Chocolate Biscuit Pudding for dessert and a bottle of rosé spumante to drink.
Mindful Chef
Consumers looking to treat themselves – but not overindulge – could look to Mindful Chef for their Valentine’s dinner solution. The healthy recipe box provider has a number of nutritious options on this year’s Valentine’s menu, such as sirloin, truffled mushrooms & celeriac mash and pork Valentine & sautéed potatoes with kale salsa verde (pictured). All meals take less than 30 minutes to prepare and can cater for one to four people, meaning singles and families as well as couples can partake in the hassle-free dishes (rsp: £8-£16).
Feast Box
Romantic holidays with your significant other may be off the agenda this year, but why not travel the world through the medium of food? Enter Feast Box, which provides recipes and ingredients to recreate delicacies from far-flung locations. Consumers can take their pick from a range of exotic dishes – think Egyptian Lamb Bamia, Hanoi Beef Pho or Vegetable Manti – then plan their next adventure whilst cooking and eating them. The Valentine’s Day menu launches on 1 February (rsp: from £5.50 per person), with vegan dishes and beer and wine pairings also available.
Ottolenghi
Get the day off to a cracking start with Ottolenghi’s shakshuka kit, which comes with everything you need to make the chef’s signature brunch dish (rsp: £35). To make it extra special, the kit includes a pair of heart-shaped chocolate teacakes and optional Champagne.
José Pizzaro
What could be more romantic than a cuisine deigned for sharing? If tapas is your meal of choice, Spanish chef José Pizzaro – who has been offering finish-at-home boxes while his restaurants are closed for lockdown – has introduced a special menu for Valentine’s Day. Available for delivery nationwide, the menu features classic dishes such as tortilla de patatas, cod al pil pil and spinach and goats cheese croquetas, complete with a chocolate cake with orange jam for dessert (rsp: £75). And if you need any help with preparation, the finish-at-home boxes are accompanied by instructional videos on Pizzaro’s YouTube channel.
The Plattery
Overflowing with cured meat, cheese, fruit, crudités and chutney, this Valentine’s charcuterie platter is ideal for grazing on with your loved one. Created by The Plattery, the selection features four types of meat, five cheeses and a range of accompaniments, such as mixed nuts, halkidiki olives and medjool dates. What’s more, The Plattery has thrown in smoked salmon blinis to start the meal and the ultimate Valentine’s treat - chocolate-covered strawberries - to finish off. Want to enjoy the delights of London’s Padella without the infamous queue? Now’s your chance, as the renowned pasta restaurant is offering a special menu for Valentine’s Day (rsp: £60). Described as the restaurant’s own take on steak with mac and cheese, the meal includes a Longhorn beef fillet with wild mushrooms, served alongside Padella’s signature Pici Cacio e Pepe. This is topped off with an indulgent salted chocolate pot for dessert.
Côte at Home
Bistro chain Côte Brasserie is bringing its French-inspired cuisine to consumers’ homes this Valentine’s Day with a duo of decadent dinner options. The first, a steak set menu (rsp: £45), features a starter of chicken liver parfait, followed by two British beef fillet steaks with peppercorn sauce. Fans of seafood can opt for the lobster set menu (rsp: £70), which has a marinated beetroot starter and a main course of lobster with celeriac remoulade. Both boxes also contain a fougasse bread, frites and green beans, as well as two chocolate & almond fondants and a box of Champagne truffles. Lovers looking to splash out even further can add a bottle of Taittinger Rosé or Baron de Marck Champagne for an additional cost.
Hello Fresh
Things are hotting up at Hello Fresh this February. The recipe box provider is offering a two course Valentine’s menu, incorporating a range of warm and spicy flavours perfect for a lockdown date night (rsp: from £3.99 per person). The menu’s main event is a fillet of sea bream - pan fried for perfect crispy skin - served with saffron mash, chorizo, tomato & basil salsa and green beans. This is followed by a buttery, honeyed plum tart with chocolate drizzle.
