EU butter prices continued to rise in April due to high global demand for milk fats and low supply. In February, UK butter production fell 5% year on year to 13,000 tonnes, due to tighter milk fat availability.
UK milk prices are also rising due to low milk availability following a decline in the dairy herd. However, latest reports for the ongoing spring flush in April show higher growth rates for pasture in the UK, which could increase milk availability.

Shell egg prices for processing have declined in the EU, following a drop in demand since Easter. Free-range egg layers have also been returning to outdoor pens, production to return to more normal levels.
UK cheddar prices fell in April, in line with a drop in demand for manufactured dairy products before the spring flush. Many buyers have been holding off making large volumes for purchase, in anticipation of a seasonal rise in milk availability in May.
