Founded in Germany in the 1930s as a wholesaler, Lidl is today one of the largest grocery retailers in Europe. Owned by the German-based Schwarz Group, the discounter has enjoyed strong growth throughout Europe during the downturn (including 11% in the UK), aided by its “flexibility in adapting to local market conditions” and a continuing improvement in product quality, ranging and merchandising – including in-store bakeries and coffee stations.
