Supermarkets/convenience Pick n Pay is the supermarket of choice for many middle-income African consumers but Wal-Mart’s entry into South Africa in 2011 has encouraged the chain to develop premium eco-friendly stores featuring more niche products. The new Pick n Pay Express format, launched with BP, also impressed. Operating in seven growing sub-Saharan economies, it can also expect to benefit from consolidating its buying operations and switching to centralised distribution.
