Promotional activity remained as fierce as ever this week, with more than 1,300 lines on offer in featured space in the top 50 categories alone.
But some retailers were promoting far more than others.
While Morrisons had 14 of the top 50 offers, and Tesco’s 12 offers saved a huge £30.55 of this week’s total saving, other retailers lagged behind.
Asda only had three of this week’s top 50 deals, though these did have a combined saving of £16.95 – more than the combined total of Morrisons’ 14 deals – including this week’s biggest saving: a hefty 63% discount to anyone buying five Müller Lights for £1 at Asda. The biggest cash saving, of £13.95, was also to be found at Asda, on its 3-for-£9.99 deal on Lindemans Cellar Selection. Waitrose, on the other hand, only had two of this week’s top 50 deals, and a total saving of just £2.
It was a good week for tinned food aficionados, as the format beloved of economic and nuclear doom-mongers alike jumped five spots up the table to sixth place, fuelled by 16 deals on Heinz lines. Morrisons had 18 of the 42 canned food offers. Buying all 42 tinned products on offer this week would cost £77.33, a saving of £53.20 (41%) on the full price of £130.53.
And in another good week for a discount tipple, cider shot 20 places up the table to 24th place, while instant snacks fell 12 places to 47th. The total cost of this week’s top 50 deals was £122.59, a 48.3% discount on the full price of £236.77.
