Who: Seabrook Crisps
What: Lattice – Tantalising Sweet Chilli Crisps
Where: Bagged snacks
When: Launched April 2014
How much: £1/120g
Why: Seabrook made its first foray into premium territory this year with lattice-cut crisps in sharing bags. The Bradford business – which introduced the crinkle-cut crisp to the UK in the 1950s – has invested a six-figure sum to make the crisps, which it claimed are the only lattice-cut currently on the market. In addition to the flavour tested here, they are available in natural sea salt, sea salt & red wine vinegar, rich farmhouse cheese and onion, and black pepper & sea salt.
Consumer verdict: Despite not being considered particularly new or different by some of our testers, Seabrook scored strongly across the board for its taste, price, packaging and overall quality. A further benefit was that these crisps were “less oily, with balanced flavours and a bit of a kick.” Overall, the crisps were said to be affordable, “very tasty” and ideal for chilling out, and achieved a score five points above the category average.
