Founded by a British army officer stationed in Egypt in 1924, Spinneys has grown into one of the Gulf’s leading retailers with a particularly strong presence in Lebanon and, through franchising, the UAE. The retailer operates at the premium end of grocery and is popular with expats. It has expanded aggressively in the Middle East and South East Asia, although plans to grow North African markets have been derailed somewhat due to the Arab Spring.
