The day of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, 19 September 2022, has been declared a public holiday in the UK meaning many shops are likely to amend their opening hours.

Aldi: Closed

The discounter tweeted: “As a mark of respect, all Aldi stores across the UK will close on Monday 19 September to allow our store colleagues to pay tribute to Her Majesty the Queen.”

 

 

Asda: Open from 5pm

Asda online delivery: Closed

An Asda spokesman said: “As a mark of respect for Her Majesty The Queen, all Asda stores will be closed on Monday 19 September until 5pm to allow our customers and colleagues to recognise the passing of our late Monarch and commemorate her steadfast service to our nation. We will not be offering online deliveries on Monday 19 September.

“All our stores will close by midnight on Sunday, 18 September and reopen at 5pm on Monday, 19 September. Those colleagues contracted to work while the stores are closed will receive their normal pay. Any colleagues who work when the stores reopen will be paid double time for the rest of the day.”

 

 

Co-op: Open from 5pm

Co-op CEO Shirine Khoury-Haq said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen. As a mark of respect and to give our colleagues, customers and members time to reflect and mourn, we will be closing our stores.”

The exceptions are likely to be a few stores in central London and around Windsor, which are set to stay open during the day.

 

Iceland: Closed

As well as its Iceland stores, the company will close its Swift and Food Warehouse stores, MD Richard Walker confirmed on Twitter. He added that staff would be paid for the time they would have worked had the stores been open.

 

Lidl: Closed

On Instagram, Lidl said: “In honour of Her Majesty and to allow our colleagues to pay their respects, we will be closing all of our stores across England, Scotland and Wales on the day of the funeral.

“Thank you to everyone for your understanding.”

Morrisons: Closed

Morrisons tweeted it would be closed on the day of the funeral, however its petrol filling stations are set to reopen at 5pm.

 

Ocado: No deliveries

While the website will still be operational, no deliveries will be made on 19 August. All of those prebooked for the date have been cancelled so drivers and warehouse staff can observe the bank holiday. 

 

Sainsbury’s: Closed

Sainsbury’s online delivery: Closed

Sainsbury’s Local and petrol stations: Open 5pm-10pm

A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

“In honour of Her Majesty and so our colleagues can pay their respects, all Sainsbury’s supermarkets and Argos stores will be closed on Monday, 19th September. This includes groceries online and Argos fast track delivery.

“Our convenience stores and petrol filling stations will be open from 5pm-10pm to allow our customers to pick up essential items, while select stores in central London will open to serve those attending the funeral in person. We thank our customers for their understanding.”

 

Tesco: Closed

Tesco online delivery: Closed

Tesco Express: Open from 5pm and closing at usual time

Jason Tarry, Tesco UK CEO said: “We want to express our deepest condolences to the Royal Family, as well as our gratitude to Her Majesty The Queen for her unwavering service. On Monday 19 September, in order for our colleagues to pay their respects, our large stores will be closed all day and our Express stores will remain closed until 5pm.”

Online orders will not be delivered on 19 September, with customers who have already booked a slot set to be contacted to confirm the cancellation or rebook for another day.

However, The Grocer understands a small number of Tesco stores in central London and Windsor will remain open throughout the day of the funeral to serve those attending.

Store colleagues working the day of the funeral will be rostered voluntarily and paid an increased hourly rate in line with the retailer’s usual bank holiday pay. 

 

Waitrose: Closed

A Waitrose spokeswoman said: “When full details of the funeral are confirmed, an exception may be a very limited number of Waitrose stores on the route of the funeral procession to serve members of the public who we know will be lining the route for many hours. These shops will, however, close for the funeral itself.”

John Lewis stores will also be closed.
