From its HQ in Porto Alegre, Z&B is the fifth-largest food retailer in Brazil, with 29 supermarkets and hypermarkets in the south of the country. It has given rival retailers a hard time thanks to its “good quality operation and an assortment and communication that talk directly to local shoppers”, says one judge. Owned by Companhia Zaffari, which started in 1935 and owns several shopping malls, Z&B posted revenues of US$1.5bn last year.
