Asda deputy chief executive Tony Campbell is to retire early next year after 16 years with the company. However, the company has rejected suggestions that the move is linked in any way with the departure of Allan Leighton. In an internal memo circulated at Asda's head office, Leighton told staff Campbell had told him about his plan to retire a year ago. A spokeswoman said the timing of the memo shortly after Leighton announced his decision to leave was coincidence, and had been prompted because the news had leaked out. Campbell, 51, joined Asda in 1985 as divisional director, becoming ops director, joint md, and trading director before working with Leighton as deputy chief executive. Campbell is to work on Asda's European clothing strategy until his departure. {{NEWS }}
