Asda is expanding its Plumgarths local sourcing initiative following the success of the scheme in Kendal.
Asda said its link with Plumgarths Lakelands Food Park had provided its Kendal store with 80 products from 19 local suppliers. These products will be hitting the shelves of its Barrow store in one month.
An Asda spokesman said: "The products will initially be positioned on gondola ends in the supermarket and promoted by instore PoS and ads in local papers." It is also considering supplying the lines to stores in Carlisle and Lancaster.
Asda has worked with Plumgarths since its launch by Sir Don Curry (The Grocer, September 14, p13). Livestock farmer John Geldard created it to link small specialist producers to a major supermarket.
