Asda clothing boss Angela Spindler has quit the supermarket to spend more time with her family. Spindler, who has been executive MD of the retailer's clothing brand George since November 2005, has held several senior roles during her 10 years at Asda, including trading and marketing director. She had been tipped to become Asda's chief executive following Tony DeNunzio's departure in 2005, but Andy Bond took the top job and later that year Spindler moved into his former role as MD of George Global. The reshuffle meant a move to Asda's headquarters in Leicestershire and a lengthy commute from her home in North Yorkshire. "On a good day the journey can take an hour-and-a-half but on a bad day it can take four hours. This meant Angela had less time to spend with her children," said a spokesman for Asda. Now Spindler plans to spend time helping her two children, aged 15 and 17, as they approach their exams. Spindler joined the retailer in 1997 as business unit director for chilled foods and was promoted to deputy trading director, joining Asda's management board. Following the acquisition of Asda by Wal-Mart, she was appointed food trading director, became retail development director in 2001 and trading and marketing director in 2004. During her time in charge of George she was instrumental in developing Must Have clothing, which was fronted by Coleen McLoughlin. The range of 'on trend' fashions proved to be the most successful in George's 16-year history, boosting clothing sales by 50% year-on-year. What became known as the 'Coleen effect' saw a Lurex vest sell at a rate of 10 a minute last August. Andy Bond said: "I'd like to thank Angela personally. I've known her throughout her career at Asda and hold her in high regard."
