Asda's main pizza maker is braced for 400 redundancies after the retailer cancelled its supply deal.

The retailer will end its deal with Paramount Foods in September. About 144 redundancies are expected in the pizza base factory in Salford and 156 losses in the topping site in Deeside.

The GMB is representing the staff and wants to discuss the cancellation with Asda boss Andy Bond. "The business has struggled for some time as supermarkets keep margins to the bare minimum. It has had four owners in four years," said Mark Jones, GMB regional official.

The contract closure had been on the cards for some time, an Asda spokeswoman said. "It's always easier to remain with a supplier than move away from one and we have hand-held Paramount's management through this process."
