Reggae Reggae Sauce founder Levi Roots has always been one of our industry’s more showbiz figures. So it made sense for him to take an acting role in the BBC’s cheerful Caribbean murder series Death in Paradise.
And Bogof watched it so you don’t have to!
Roots initially seems typecast, opening the episode with a stirring performance as the guitarist in a reggae band. Backstage, the group celebrate, but Roots’ character Billy is glum - he reckons he’s found new evidence in the cold case of his wife’s murder. Enter amusingly shirted DI Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon). He goes to meet Billy, but finds our man dead on the ground. Cue opening credits!
Roots’ performance is as subtle as it is lengthy, but this isn’t exactly The Killing, and it works. Our man has since touted for drama classes on Twitter, so a new career beckons.
Oh, and - spoiler alert! - the bassist did it.
