While not shouting about it, Booths Supermarkets continues to give the top five multiples a run for their money.
Just last week, the retailer beat off stiff competition to claim the title of Overall Wine Merchant of the Year at the International Wine Challenge.
It already holds the title of Beer Supermarket of the Year from the British Guild of Beer Writers, and was well-known for its local sourcing long before the term became a buzz phrase.
Of course, a supermarket is only as good as its buying team. David Benson, buying and distribution director, highlights several key strengths. He says its members are well-versed in how the business is run: "Several have more than 20 years experience with Booths and work very closely to ensure the demands of the company can be met."
This commitment to close relationships and open communication is something that has been carried into local sourcing, says Benson.
"By working closely with regional suppliers, we can help develop the best products and by ordering them daily, we can ensure they are always delivered fresh and in perfect condition."
He adds: "The team also organises in-store tastings which form part of an ongoing programme to develop the range of products available."
