You don’t have to be cheap to offer value
The Which? supermarket survey put Waitrose top. Rivals would do well to learn from its example.

Editor's Comment: I doubt Tesco’s new promotion mechanic, the BOGIFPC, is going to catch on
Have you read any of Philip Clarke's tweets (twitter.com/clarkepatesco)? In an otherwise low-key start for Tesco's new CEO, he's been informing his 2,767 followers (including rivals, I can assure you), of his whereabouts.

Feeling co-operative?
Today The Co-op unveiled some pretty dismal like-for-like numbers for food sales, down 2.5% on last year. That wasn’t a huge surprise coming off the back of a disappointing Christmas.

Buried alive
'Sainsburied’ screams the headline in today’s edition of The Sun. It’s a nice line. Just as pleasingly, though less dramatically, the Financial Times notes that ‘Good shares cost less at Sainsbury’s’.

Ad of the Week: The Co-op’s call to arms is a very bloodless revolution
You might think DC10's talk about adopting a granny is cynical rhetoric that aims only to mask the wreckage of savage spending cuts, like a razor blade hidden in a cupcake. And you'd be right.

Editor's Comment: Nobody better than Tesco at stealing rivals' thunder
Asda has spent the last 18 months working with mysupermarket.co.uk to develop its shiny Price Guarantee website. So credit has to go to those jackdaws over in Cheshunt who've knocked together their own passable imitation in 10 seconds flat.

Terry, we hardly knew ye
Elvis has left the building. Okay, so Sir Terry Leahy is probably few people’s idea of a rock star. But for UK grocery, his long-awaited exit represents as seismic a departure as when rock and roll died on a Las Vegas toilet in 1977.

Satisfaction not guaranteed
Asda today published its full-year results – or rather, the collection of cherry-picked factoids that passes for a breakdown of its financial performance. Sales were up 1.6% on a like-for-like basis in the fourth quarter, representing something of a turnaround from the slow-motion car-crash of last year.
