quail

Ever wondered if those eggs in your fridge would one day hatch into lovable creatures were it not for the cruel chill you were subjecting them to?

In theory, dear readers of The Grocer (and you should already know this), the fact they aren’t fertilised should mean it’s not possible to accidentally boil a baby bird at breakfast. Some do slip through the net, though.

Fortunately for Albert the quail, whose egg was purchased from a supermarket in Haarlem in the Netherlands, shopper Alwyn Wils was curious enough to stick 12 eggs into an incubator. A month later, little Albert hatched - and is now happily hopping around his Hollandy home.

Wils reckons Albert is a symbol for the ‘anything’s possible’ spirit: we just think he’s super-adorable.

Having said that, the situation does kind of give us the shivers. What cuteness lurks unhatched in the egg aisle?
