As with all food additives, before a low-calorie sweetener is approved for use on the market, the regulatory authorities thoroughly and extensively assess all kinds of scientific studies to establish safety.
The European Food Safety Authority’s scientific opinion on aspartame (2013), which reconfirmed that aspartame is safe, represents one of the most comprehensive assessments of a food additive ever undertaken. It further details why studies were or weren’t dismissed in the process.
At a time when obesity and non-communicable diseases including diabetes and dental caries remain major global health challenges and public health authorities are encouraging food manufacturers to replace sugar and reduce calories in their products, it is critical that the public is provided with reliable science-based information regarding the safety and the utility of low-calorie sweeteners, which is supported by food safety authorities and health organisations worldwide
