There’s something about Game of Thrones. Its easy blend of violence and nudity (and ‘politics’, which is what people tell you they watch it for) has been capturing viewers’ attention since 2011.
But it’s also inspired several food and drink tributes, many of which have filled Bogof’s pages over the past eight years, from wine to pop-up restaurants to ‘direwolf bread’ to, memorably, a chick-hatching competition.
As the seventh and final season kicks off, dragon-and-partial-nudity-loving fmcg brands are offering up their final stunts. There are so many launches there’s even a special feature in the grown-ups section of The Grocer website!
Our favourite stunt comes courtesy of margarine brand Stork, which, revelling in its nominative similarity to the show’s House of Stark, last week commissioned food artist Michelle Wibowo to craft life-size cake sculptures of three characters. The grey-iced titans – which each took 300 hours to make (almost as much time as it takes to watch a season of Game of Thrones) – were unveiled and nibbled to death by Tower Bridge.
Stork reckons the finales of big TV shows have become part of a new wave of celebratory baking occasions. For the sake of the amusing foodie stunts we’re so fond of, we hope it’s right.
