Sir, I read once again in The Grocer about bioplastic and how they may not be the solution.
This article focused heavily on recycling, and the so-called experts all talked about recycling. It was like putting the manager of a football team in as the referee for a match.
The recycling industry in the UK is flawed and this has been highlighted many times, so why try to add more negativity?
Instead, look at the positives bioplastics can bring. They contain no artificial chemicals, they will compost under the right conditions and these facilities do exist, although not widely. There are bottles on the market made from PLA that contain water but because of their make-up, glass-like finish and rigidity, they are great to refill, removing the label of single-use. Other bioplastic operators also run closed loop systems so all waste is collected and dealt with.
So before giving bioplastics a bad press, please consider it the alternative to single-use plastic it really is.
