Jaffa

The Great British Bake Off is a smash hit in our land of tea, crumpets, cakes and fat rascals. What other nation is so devoted to bakery?

Well, France, perhaps. And sure enough, Le Meilleur Pâtissier (The Best Pastry Chef) - a Gallic take on Bake Off - has been running since 2012, battling over the best croissants, palmiers and croquembouche.

But last week, les boulangers took on les rosbifs. The technical challenge was to create jaffa cakes. “Apparently, they’re English,” shrugged a bemused participant. It didn’t go well, with a screenshot of saddened judge Cyril Lignac uttering “c’est pas un jaffa cake” delighting Twitter’s GBBO fans.

So why couldn’t the French do it? A clue lies in the timing - this took place in ‘biscuit week’.

Other takeaways from French Bake Off? Its tent features, for no obvious reason, a piano. Take note, Channel 4!
