Iceland and Home Bargains have both said stores will be closed on Boxing Day as well as Christmas Day this year to give staff more time off.
Iceland, which remained closed on Boxing Day last year, said it would allow workers more time with friends and family by closing its 1,000-plus core stores along with The Food Warehouse stores.
“This year has taken its toll on everyone, so officially closing our doors on Boxing Day is just a small token of appreciation to our employees,” said Iceland MD Richard Walker.
“As we move into the winter months, the cost of living burden will unfortunately only intensify, and as we work relentlessly to pass on savings and support to our customers, we must also look after our teams who are at the forefront of this crisis every day across the UK.”
Home Bargains said stores would close on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and from 5pm on Christmas Eve to let staff enjoy the festivities with loved ones.
The retailer also closed on Boxing Day last year.
A Home Bargains spokeswoman said: “We know how hard all our colleagues have worked throughout the year. Being a family-run business, we recognise the importance of spending quality time with our loved ones. Therefore, we feel it is only right to support our valued store teams by giving them extended time off around Christmas and new year.”
Aldi yesterday said it would keep stores closed as usual on Boxing Day as it launched a search for 3,000 recruits ahead of the festive season.
