Adland is obsessed with the concept of ‘quirky’. So it’s a genuine surprise when something ‘offbeat’ turns up and is - gasp! - actually original and witty.

When the woman in Cadbury’s Crispello ad suddenly bursts into song, it’s to be expected: quirksters have been wringing that trope out for a decade or so. But the subject matter of Crispello girl’s ditty - her licentious passion for her boyfriend’s dad - isn’t.

There’s a distinctly Lynchian tone here - the song comes as the family stumble through a lonely woodland clearing, and Cadbury’s Joyville band pops up from nowhere to accompany the funny, actually-quite-saucy lyrics. And it doesn’t outstay its welcome, either - we’re all done in just 40 seconds. As the dad says: “Lovely.”
