Adland is fond of ironic appreciations of cheesy classics: see Cadbury man’s love of Baccara, or perhaps Carlsberg’s take on (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.
So it’s a rare nod to actual modern pop in the new McCoy’s ad, which sees an everybloke out for a drive, hollering along to Ella Henderson’s Ghosts. He has to check his enthusiasm at a pedestrian crossing (a familiar feeling for all fans of car-a-oke) and when he arrives at a petrol station.
But the song is also playing in store, and his decision to buy a bag of McCoy’s awakens his inner Ella. Soon our man is serenading everyone in the shop. ‘Go bold’, we’re told.
It’s nothing new, but it is likeable, especially given the admirably ‘big’ performance of the lead.
