In Adland, Christmas seems to come earlier every year. It’s remarkable how few advertisers take the opportunity to have fun with this, perhaps because we live in an era where Christmas ads have somehow become ‘important’.
Respect, then, to Pizza Hut for doing so – though to be fair it had to have a laugh with this online ad, given it is principally designed to promote its ‘Christmas pizza’: a troubling item that features chicken, bacon, stuffing and a “red wine gravy base”. Mmm.
Pizza Hut’s spokes-bloke swaps the sparklers for a Victorian Xmas get-up, meeting up with a choir of four versions of himself (“nothing says Christmas like pizza”, they sing) to tell us all about it.
It’s bold, fresh and wryly funny, as the choir’s final line – “the best thing from 2020” – proves.
