As for moose, in Finland they are a pest. Their numbers must be controlled as they affect the timber industry and farming. Miles of fencing along the main roads are testament to the danger they present to traffic. I have family involved in the annual moose hunt and the cull is necessary and strictly regulated. When people get outraged about reindeer consumption they should think about the economy in Lapland. It has two things – tourism and reindeer.
The livelihood of the Saami people is not as dependent on reindeer as it once was, but still plays a major part. It would be a shame if a prospective new market was denied them on the basis of misunderstanding.
