Sir; I would like to agree with the verdict of your "disappointed" mystery shopper who visited the first Asda Wal-Mart supercentre in Bristol (The Grocer, August 5, p4). I popped into the store on my way back home two weeks ago after a holiday in Devon. And I experienced something I loathe blocked toilets. Most shoppers have their bugbears. With your The Grocer 33 person it's dented trollies. With me perhaps because I have a young child it's dirty toilets. What amused me was that as I left the store, I saw a sign saying how Asda had responded to customer requests for better toilet facilities by installing more in the store. Pity it can't keep an eye on these extra facilities so that they are kept clean! That gripe aside, I have to say I enjoyed visiting the store if only because I was able to get a feel for just how enormous it was. The drinks section, electrical department and George baby store really stood out. As for the rest of the store, am I the only one to think it is as schizophrenic as the name implies? I'm not so sure the curious mix of Asda and Wal-Mart signage and merchandising techniques really worked. Anyway, one thing that did work was the customer service. There's no hype here. The people working at Patchway are really helpful and friendly. Perhaps a little too helpful and friendly, but a refreshing change to other supermarkets nonetheless.
