Senior Tesco executive Steve Ager is to become president of the Chinese joint venture announced this week.
His 27-year career at Tesco has included senior buying jobs, which saw him launch the Finest brand, and more recently a two-year stint running its international support and commercial office.
Dido Harding has replaced Ager in that role.
Ager will work alongside Wei Ying-Chiao who is chairman of Tesco’s Chinese partner and who will be chairman of their new joint venture. The Hymall hypermarket business has ambitious plans to grow sales from £330m to £450m this year. It currently operates 25 hypermarkets in the east, north and north-east of China, and it expects to open a further 10 in the coming 12 months.
Ager’s priorities will be to focus on the areas where Tesco can add value to the partnership, such as in supply chain, product development and store operations.
