Britain's biggest retailer has done it again, walking off with a hat-trick of trophies at this year's awards. Tesco mirrored last year's success by once again taking the coveted titles of Grocer of the Year and Britain's Favourite Supermarket. But this year it was Online Retailer of the Year, rather than Best Consumer Initiative, that gave Tesco the triple gold.

In the closest match to date, Sir Terry Leahy's company beat stiff competition from Waitrose to win Grocer of the Year, scoring top marks in a poll of leading City analysts, business journalists, non-grocery retailers and major suppliers for financial performance, quality of management and strength of supply chain.

However, in customer focus Waitrose was victorious while it just pipped Marks & Spencer to top place when it came to corporate social responsibility. A renewed Sainsbury's was also in the running for the award.

But it's the title of Britain's Favourite Supermarket that most delighted Leahy. Based on ACNielsen's survey of Homescan household panel members , Tesco came top in three areas: range, service and stock levels and second in price and quality, making it shoppers' number one choice overall. Asda is still top for price and M&S for quality, the latter also moving from fourth to second place on service. Sainsbury's work on availability is paying off, with the company leaping back into the top three on stock levels.

It was a close fight between Tesco and last year's winner Ocado for the online trophy. Judges commended the progress of all entrants but were particularly impressed with "the sheer scale and breadth of the Tesco offer". As winner of two of The Grocer 33 Online's four basket surveys during the past year, Tesco delivers great customer service, availability and a financial performance that is unrivalled.
