United Co-op is believed to be the first retailer in the country to trial white noise to deter burglars, introducing the system at four c-stores in south Manchester. White noise is created through an internal siren linked to the intruder alarm. The burglar is met by an unbearable barrier of sound. Dave Williams, United Co-op's general manager loss prevention and compliance, said: "Burglaries at convenience stores throughout the country are on the increase. "We believe that a major reason is tough action by Customs and Excise in cracking down on smuggled cigarettes." {{NEWS }}
