Asda was named Britain’s favourite supermarket for the second year running at The Grocer Gold Awards this week while Tesco was clear winner in the grocer of the year category.
Asda president and CEO Tony DeNunzio said he was delighted to receive the award, which is based on a poll of over 7,000 consumers conducted for The Grocer by ACNielsen.
“It’s great to win the one award that is voted for by the people that matter - the customers. It is a vindication of all the hard work that our 130,000 people do in store and how the Asda brand interacts with customers.”
Asda also won The Grocer 33 prizes for price and service. Morrisons was best for availability.
Tesco was judged the best grocery retailer in the business by leading analysts, business journalists, non-grocery retailers and top suppliers. Company secretary Lucy Neville-Rolfe said she was delighted to pick up the award which reflected the past year’s achievements.
Tesco also won the award for best consumer initiative for its sponsorship of Mother & Baby’s Save a Life campaign.
Hull-based convenience operator Jacksons scooped top prize in the coveted independent retail chain of the year category.
“We are absolutely delighted,” said managing director Angus Oughtred. “It shows that, by focusing totally on being local and understanding
local customer needs, you can differentiate yourself in this competitive market.”
United Co-operatives scooped the top prize in the best business initiative category for its implementation of voice recognition technology at distribution centres in Stoke and Bradford.
Boots took best own label range for the relaunch of Shapers, in conjunction with suppliers Hazlewood and Buckingham Foods.
Masterfoods won best new product development with its Bisc& range. Warburton’s was named best branded supplier for the second year and Arla scooped best own label supplier.
