Netto has bought Safeway’s store in Norwood, Beverley, from Morrisons for an undisclosed sum.
The Danish company, which is also interested in a raft of Safeway’s smaller stores, will pump £3m into refurbishing the store, which will re-open in the new year.
With more than 40 of its 135 UK stores in Yorkshire, Netto is among the top five retailers in the region, claimed Netto UK MD Claus Wædeled.
He said: “More and more shoppers are recognising the benefit of Netto, especially in view of the fact that we are increasing shopping efficiency by driving down the cost and time it takes to shop.
“What we offer is no frills and lower bills.”
A subsidiary of Danish group Dansk Supermarket, Netto is aiming to open between 20 and 25 new stores a year in the UK.
n Morrisons has now sold 43 of the 52 Safeway stores it was required to divest by regulators.
Fourteen have been sold to Sainsbury, 14 to Waitrose, three to Asda and 10 to Tesco. Netto and West Midlands Co-op have each bought one.
