United Wholesale (Scotland), 25th on our most recent The Big 30 wholesaler rankings with a turnover of £97m, this week opened its first dedicated delivered wholesale warehouse in Queenslie, Glasgow. The facility, which holds 1,000 ambient lines, complements United's two C&C depots in Glasgow.

The 70,000 sq ft Queenslie warehouse occupies part of a 170,000 sq ft building and United hopes to build enough trade eventually to occupy it in full. United's sales and distribution director Michael Koetsier says: "We will go national throughout the UK before the end of 2007, delivering to all independent sector customers. But for now we are already delivering as far south as Lancashire on the west coast. We will be delivering to Newcastle by next year."

United offers its customers access to delivered services via a multilingual telephone call centre, fax, or its newly launched website, which is available in English, Hindi, Urdu and Polish.

To build customer awareness in Scotland, United is holding launch events around Scotland this month. The first was held in Dundee last week, where 120 retailers signed up.

United has also been running a tongue-in-cheek billboard and print advertising campaign in Scotland for several months with the strapline 'The Revolution is Coming to You', and featuring a variation on the iconic poster of Che Guevara.

Koetsier says the United offer is unique because of the business's detailed knowledge and its ability to work closely with suppliers. "This enables us to create a better package for our customers."

In terms of what the business itself can offer, Koetsier reports that the Day-Today fascia scheme, which it launched in Scotland last year with Nisa-Today's, is progressing well. "It is going fantastically. We are signing up three to four members per week lately and now have 60 members in total."
