The United Co-operative’s store in Hazel Grove, Stockport, trades in the shadow of a Sainsbury store just 500 yards away, yet still provides a positive shopping experience.
The store was clean and well merchandised with helpful and professional staff. Among others, our shopper was particularly impressed by a knowledgeable assistant in the wine section.
The store was unable to provide four of The Grocer 33 items and one of those items, the own label budget white sliced loaf, was out of stock. The store did not sell pre-packed baking potatoes, Peperami 5-packs or Del Monte pineapple sliced in juice. In the case of the pineapple, there was an alternative in the form of Del Monte pineapple chunks.
The initial per kilo price of lean mince was £5.70 but a promotion offered two 500g packs for £4. Other promotions included a buy one get one free offer on Radox herbal bath and Flora Light was reduced from 99p to 68p.
Provided a full basket of 33 items and had a number of promotions on the listed items. Own label quiche lorraine was 2 for £3 and Domestos was 2 for £1.36. There was also 2 for £2 promotions on Radox herbal bath and Pringles.
The store was clean and tidy and the staff polite and helpful. The checkout assistant was patient and apologised to our shopper because the customer in front left the till twice in order to pick up additional items.
The store was well merchandised and well laid out with wide aisles that were easy for our shopper to navigate.
