Stuart Owens became a trainee buyer for Sainsbury in 1990 and was soon promoted to a buying role in the health and beauty category.
He then moved on to household products, covering detergents, and then started in a role in which he developed own-label products.
His final role with Sainsbury was as a buyer for seasonal barbecue and kitchenware ranges.
In 1998, he became a buyer for pet accessories at US chain Petsmart before joining Safeway as a buyer for soup, canned fruit and desserts in 2000.
He took up his current role at Waitrose in 2003 and is now responsible for buying ambient and chilled juice lines.
