The Co-operative Group is trialling a little-known yellow flesh salad potato called Corolle.
Originally grown in France, the potato is being produced in the UK for the first time by Produce World.
Corolle potatoes are being sold under the Co-op’s Premium range label. The 550g pouch - which retails at £1.49 - incorporates a sachet of buttery mint drizzle.
Co-op potato buyer Graham Nuttall said: “This gives customers something very different. It has been the first
potato to be selected for our Premium label and will be rolled out nationally next year.”
Produce World technologist Simon Faulkner said the potato was well on its way to becoming commercial. “We imported 25 tonnes of seed for 2004 planting and are planning two to three times that amount next year.”
